Seth Rogen is famous for his all-burping, all-farting gross-out comedies. But occasionally real life out-grosses even a Seth Rogen movie. Take, for example, the time he was told his friend Will Reiser had cancer. Another friend had already phoned Rogen to warn him that Reiser was going to call with the bad news. A few minutes later the phone rang. By now, Rogen was on the toilet, deeply concentrated. Rogen and Reiser have invented a new genre: the cancer comedy. Because, they say, cancer is hilarious.
A 50-50 Chance
Going into this interview, I pretty much had one goal in mind: become friends with Seth Rogen. BYT: First off, I loved the movie. BYT: Will, this was based your experience. How closely did this follow how things actually went down? Also, the way in which my friends and I used humor to cope, and how at that time in my life I was incredibly neurotic.
As a psychologist, relationship expert and a psychotherapist for 20 also a movie called, 50/50 about dating with cancer written by Will Reiser.
The movie, which world-premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released in the U. Levine, whose feature debut was the offbeat Sundance comedy The Wackness , starring Ben Kingsley, tries very hard — perhaps too hard — to achieve the above honor. But, judging by the end result, Levine delivers a heartfelt, if not always a completely convincing or satisfying, film. This cancer story also belongs to the growing subgenre of bromance, offering Joseph Gordon-Levitt one of his richest roles to date; he is often cast in secondary parts, as in Inception dir.
Christopher Nolan, US, Gordon-Levitt plays Adam I wish he answered to another name , a guy who gets sick with a rare form of cancer, while Seth Rogen best known for his Judd Apatow comedies is his loud, outspoken friend Kyle, who will not leave his side. This is the season for professionals to violate their code of ethics: In A Dangerous Method, Carl Jung Michael Fassbender has a steamy, ferocious affair with his unstable patient, played by Keira Knightley.
The filmmakers use the illness as a pretext to throw Adam into an existential crisis, one that calls for the reevaluation of his identity, his lifestyle, and all of his relationships. The screenwriter includes many pop culture references in the dialogue, which seem natural for his young, hip, well-educated characters. Opinion may vary. This is often the problem of serio-comedies.
The film takes place in a dream-like Seattle in a dream-like America, where working for public radio both Adam and Kyle do so is almost as cool as working for Facebook in The Social Network
Anna Kendrick is all into ’50/50′
The often amusing and touching film, opening Friday and inspired by screenwriter Will Reiser’s battle with the devastating illness, also features Reiser’s pal, Seth Rogen doubling as producer , as well as Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston. What made you pursue this role? I should say the role was offered to me over Christmas I then met with director Jonathan Levine, and I just got really excited about the character.
And that true story is based on the experiences of “50/50” screenwriter Will Reiser, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 25 and.

The fact that it never once delves into manipulative melodrama makes it almost miraculous. This is a genuine balancing act to be sure, but it is one masterfully pulled off by writer Will Reiser and director Jonathan Levine. Or as I like to call it, the film that should have won the audience award at the recent Toronto International Film Festival.
Early on in the film, year-old Adam Joseph Gordon-Levitt is hit with the news that he has a rare form of spinal cancer. His mother Anjelica Huston wants to move in. But when he tells Kyle Seth Rogen the news, his best friend starts using humour and the prospect of picking up girls to help them both through the rough time.
Movie Review: 50/50
Instead of being profoundly affected by his diagnosis, he fails to react or display any emotion. He matter-of-factly tells the news to the most important people in his life, including his hilariously vulgar best friend Kyle Seth Rogen and his obnoxiously artsy girlfriend Rachael Bryce Dallas Howard. Her professionalism is underwhelming as she drives him home, gives him her number, tells him about cyber stalking her ex-boyfriend, and eventually dates him. Still, Katherine is definitely a step up from Rachael, who forgets to pick Adam up from chemo and who Kyle later catches lip-locking with another man.
Showing a picture of his girlfriend cheating on him even fails to get a reaction out of Adam. However, on the rare occasions when Adam does show emotion, the movie shows promise.
The chance for Adam’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) survival is 50/50, but the rating for Adam’s therapist, Katherine (Anna Kendrick), points out the callousness of tells him about cyber stalking her ex-boyfriend, and eventually dates him. filming and the screenplay written by the real-life Adam, Will Reiser.
The film is loosely inspired by Reiser’s own experience with cancer, with Rogen’s character Kyle based on Rogen himself. It was filmed from February to March While Kyle is brash and outspoken, Adam is more introverted and mild-mannered. After experiencing strong pains in his back, Adam is diagnosed with schwannoma neurofibrosarcoma , a malignant cancerous tumor in his spine, and must undergo chemotherapy.
After Adam reveals this, his mother Diane, who nurses her Alzheimer’s -stricken husband Richard, offers to care for him. Adam declines as Rachael has already promised to do so. While at one of his treatments, Adam meets Mitch and Alan, two older cancer patients also undergoing chemotherapy, and they become friends. Rachael is uncomfortable during his treatments and is often late to pick him up. She also gets him a retired racing greyhound as a pet, named Skeletor. Throughout Adam’s struggle, Kyle attempts to maintain his morale, helping Adam shave his head and openly using his illness to pick up women.
While on a date, Kyle sees Rachael with another man at a gallery and takes a photo, later forcing her to confess to infidelity by showing it to Adam, who breaks up with her.

Few people go to the movies expecting or even wanting to see reality. More often than not, people go to the movie theater or reorder their Netflix queue in order to escape and to be entertained. In fact, the highest grossing genres for years have been science fiction and animation, with documentaries usually coming in dead last. Even widely renowned and serious films often fail to reflect reality accurately. The recently released independent film directed by Jonathan Levine and written by Will Reiser has impressed critics www.
It’s not hard to see why the film has caught on.
It’s more than an even bet you’ll like ’50/50′
I’m Terry Gross. The film was written by my guest, Will Reiser, who drew on his own experience getting diagnosed with cancer in his 20s. He had just begun to establish himself in the world of comedy, working on “Da Ali G Show,” where he met Seth Rogen, who became a good friend. He’ll join the conversation a little later. He first became known for his starring role on “3rd Rock From the Sun. It received its world premiere earlier this month at the Toronto Film Festival.
Will Reiser actually was seeing a therapist, but I think she was about In the film, she was fictional anyway, so that was kind of great.
Despite the movie being about cancer, you cannot have a film with Seth Rogen “Pineapple Express” and “The Green Hornet” and not expect it to have a few jokes in it. This is definitely not “Beaches” or “Steel Magnolias. Rogen plays Adam’s co-worker and best friend, Kyle, who uses Adam’s cancer to pick up women — for Adam, but mostly for himself — because what else is cancer good for than guilting women who would usually not date you into doing so. Even Adam’s mother tires to use his cancer to get the air conditioning in the hospital turned down.
When Adam first learns he has cancer he tries to give Rachael the opportunity to leave — Adam is really a sweet guy and Gordon-Levitt does an excellent job portraying all the emotions that come with the part — but she says she loves Adam and will be with him to the end because it would be mean to break up with someone once you find out they have cancer.
This is the one part of the movie I thought was a little too harsh on Rachael’s character. Before Adam was diagnosed Rachael was … not a nice person. She is clearly selfish and likes Adam because he is comfortable and will not rock the boat in their relationship. So when she was found to be cheating on Adam — do not act surprised, this is still a romantic comedy — I was not surprised. She did not have the temperament to be a caretaker to someone with a terminal illness, so I was not surprised that she betrayed him.
Although Rogen steals the movie — he is essentially playing himself in every movie I have seen him in, but it works — Anjelica Huston “The Royal Tenenbaums” and “The Addams Family” makes every scene she is in incredible as Adam’s overprotective mother, Diane. When Adam announces to his family he has cancer, his mother replies that she is moving in to take care of her son.
New Movie Portrays Cancer Perceptively but Psychology Offensively
Oscar-nominated for her role in ‘Up in the Air’, Anna Kendrick is keen to move on from her stand-out role, she tells Matt Mueller. While the industry goodwill generated by her Oscar-nominated performance gets her foot in the door, the actress is now deluged with offers for what she calls “uptight, ambitious, unfeeling girls”. She keeps turning them down because, as the smart actors know, resting on your laurels is like having a a-day smoking habit — it will shorten your life by several years.
The makers of the comedy, including producer Seth Rogen, would have been perfectly satisfied if she’d churned out a variation on Up in the Air’s brisk corporate pixie, but she had other ideas. First, the actress had to clear up a few misconceptions with Jonathan Levine, the Wackness director, who was hired after Nicole Holofcener departed for personal reasons.
